Popis: Challenge The new Hazira Container Terminal at Adani Port is an important spot for international commerce. Located in the North-South corridor along the West coast of India, the terminal processes cargo moving to and from Europe, Africa, the Americas and the Middle East. As the terminal’s wharf is only 1,970 feet and must accommodate many trucks moving cargo on and off of various transport ships, traffic management of the wharf was very difficult. Terminal managers struggled to prevent backups in loading and unloading goods. In August of 2012, Adani Port began working with Suraj Informatics Pvt. Ltd. (SIPL), a provider of IT and telecommunication infrastructure solutions, to develop an RFID solution that would improve loading and unloading efficiency at the port. By January 2013, the solution was fully operational. How It Works When a driver arrives at the port gate, he or she receives one of The Tag Factory’s M-Crown ruggedized tags, powered by Impinj Monza 4 chips, which is attached to the vehicle’s dashboard. Staff members at the gate enter the tag’s ID number with data about the vehicle and associated cargo. The ID number encoded to the tag is then linked in the SIPL software to information about the trucking company, the vehicle, and the products being transported. The SIPL software forwards that data to the Terminal Operating System (TOS), and the TOS software prints a receipt for the driver. Next, the driver continues past a pole-mounted RFID reader, which detects the tag’s ID number and forwards it to the TOS software, where the vehicle’s location status is updated. This updated location status prompts the gate to open, and allows the truck to enter the wharf. The driver then heads to the assigned wharf location. A reader installed on a rubber-tiered gantry (RTG) or quay crane (QC) reads the vehicle’s tag and sends data to the RTG or QC operator’s onboard computer, so the operator can properly discharge or load vehicle’s goods. The data is also sent to the back-end database via a Wi-Fi or GPRS connection, and is stored in the TOS. After loading or unloading cargo, the vehicle continues to the exit gate, where another reader detects the tag. The TOS solution prints an exit-gate pass, and the terminal’s boom barrier allows the vehicle to pass from the terminal to the port gate. When the vehicle reaches the port gate exit, a reader detects the tag a final time as it is turned over to the terminal staff, and the TOS software prompts the port gate boom barrier to open and let the vehicle leave the port. Benefits The Hazira Container Terminal reports that it has achieved 50 percent better cargo-management efficiency than other terminals of the same size, due to its RFID solution. The solution has decreased time necessary to load and unload each truck, and consequently the truck waiting times. It has also decreased data-entry time of the loading equipment operators, thereby reducing terminal labor costs. The terminal management also is now enjoying improved terminal visibility; they know exactly how many trucks are in the facility at a given time, and are able to issue alerts if a vehicle is taking more than its expected time to load or unload.
